Welcome from

Faye Anderson, Principal, Burnham Village School

Tricia Alley, Assistant Principal, Burnham Village School

Welcome to Burnham Village School’s website.  Burnham Village School houses four sessions of kindergarten. This small building offers a unique experience for students.  It is a Kindergarten Center with all programs centered on the developmental needs of the five-year-old child. We have an extended half-day program with students in attendance from 8:45-1:30. Kindergarten students have their own bus run providing them with bus safety education. During their time at school students have access to our Title I Literacy program, Physical Education, Music, Art and Library.  The Burnham Village School has a classroom teaching staff of 4 with several support staff to ensure the success of all students.

For the 2009-2010 school year, we have 62 students enrolled giving us a teacher/student ratio of 1:16.  Each class has a Title I Educational technician to support staff and students in literacy.  Following the end of the student day, teachers work collaboratively to provide a quality education for all students.

In reading, we follow the Ohio State University Literacy Collaborative Framework Model, using the research of Fountas and Pinnell and Marie Clay. Students take part in Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Shared Writing, Interactive Writing, Writing Workshop, and Independent Writing. We ensure that students have a variety of experiences with all the different components of reading including phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

The Investigations math program focuses on problem solving strategies and is activity based. Students learn to work cooperatively to solve problems that connect math to everyday occurrences. We also work at enhancing math vocabulary, fluency, computation and writing through supplemental activities.  Science and Social Studies are integrated into reading and math and is thematic based.

Student progress in reading is monitored throughout the year with reading assessments, writing prompts, letter identification assessments, Concepts about Print, and running records. Goals for students are created based on their progress. Assessments are also given through the Investigations program and through teacher created assessments.  We have initiated Essential Learning in math to ensure that all students have acquired the same core skills. These essential learning standards are based on Maine Learning Results.

Parent/Teacher conferences are held in November. Student Led Portfolio Shares occur in April providing students the opportunity to show their family the progress they have made throughout the year.

The Burnham Village School is a wonderful leaning community that puts the children’s needs first.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school and we will be happy to speak with you.

Respectfully,

Faye Anderson
